The walk back to the Jingle Bell Inn is quiet. In fact, Klaus has barely said a word to me since his mother found us dry humping and kissing each other like horny teenagers.
I canât tell if heâs embarrassed we were caught or if he regrets it. If we werenât on assignment in his hometown, I would let it go. I would wait and see what happens.
I canât.
âSo it seems that we canât be left alone anywhere we go.â
Klaus chuckles softly but doesnât respond. I am seriously starting to doubt the zoologists who claim reindeer are sociable and chatty animals.
âIt really does look to me like you canât get enough of my cranberry kisses.â I purse my lips at him as a joke, grabbing his arm to stop him from walking away.
The hint of a smirk melts his glower.
I continue pouting at him as I step toward him. Itâs cold out here, but Iâm sure we can find an activity to keep each other warm. I raise myself up to the tips of my toes and press my lips to his furry cheek.
His hands grab my hips, but he doesnât make another move. âRaya,â he warns. âWhat the hell are you doing?â
âIâm tempting you with my cranberry lips. I should think it was obvious. Maybe I need to be more straightforward.â Without further ado, I kiss him square on the mouth, my tongue dipping between his lips like a shy little turtle.
It takes him only a second to react. He holds me closer, his lips moving in time with mine. I was right, of course. I donât feel the cold at all anymore. All I can feel is Klausâs arms around me, his feverish kisses, and his hands traveling everywhere he can reach. I want to curse my leather jacket for the first time in my life. Usually, I love it. I use it like armor, but right now, my favorite garment is in the way.
âWe really need to figure out whatâs going on here.â He sighs without letting me go.
âWeâre on the mission, Klaus. First, weâll figure out if someone really is after the wreath.â
He shakes his head. âNot what I was referring to. I meant between us. We need to figure out what the hell is happening between us. We canât keep kissing whenever we find a free second.â
I roll my eyes. âI know that. Do you think I want to want you? Hell, no. My sister met her boyfriend on her first assignment. I donât want to follow in those footsteps. Everyone will think Iâm copying her again.â
Klaus arches a brow. âYou really think thatâs the biggest concern right now? What your family will think?â
âSort of?â I blush all the way to my toes.
âYou really take sibling rivalry to a whole other level, Raya. You should be concerned that it will distract us from our work. That Alyce will be pissed.â
âDirector Cooper wonât say a thing about it. Itâs not like she would believe it, anyway. Her loner-est loner to ever loner? Kissing his partner? Sheâll laugh herself silly.
